Twenty Thousand
Leagues Under the Sea
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the sea is one of the science fiction and adventure
books written by Jules Verne(1828-1905) and
published in 1870.
As the title, it's a novel that talks about the journey of men under
the sea at 20.000 leagues of distance.
The story was set in the second half of the
eighteen century, the sea was haunted by a strange monster that caused numerous accidents to ships. For this reason the main character Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French
marine biologist accompanied by his faithful assistant Conseil and Canadian
whaler Ned Land, was invited by the US government
to join the expedition on board a ship called the Abraham Lincoln. For a
series of adventures the three found the “creature” which was just a huge
submarine, the Nautilus, with the captain Nemo who was hospitable and invited
them to join his crew. He also said they could never leave because he was afraid they would betray his existence to the world. During the journey under the
sea, they encountered many unknown creatures and interesting things, faced numerous adventures, but deep inside their hearts they plotted to go back home.
The novel shows us many imaginative
aspects of the sea beds: like the "sea forest "which is animated by numerous
sea beings; ruins and wrecks of ships caused by power of the sea; some anomalous
places like the cemetery where the died members of the crew lay....
Overall "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under
the Sea" is a fantastic fiction novel.
