THE TURN OF THE SCREW

THE TURN OF THE SCREW - Henry James                                            (by Eric)

A young baby-sitter called Miss Giddens goes to work in a rich man’s house in London. She has to take care of the man’s grandchildren. They are a boy, Miles, who’s 11 years old, and Flora, an 8 year old girl. Their parents are dead and so they are living with their uncle. Before her, there was Bly, another baby-sitter…. Strangely she died for unknown circumstances. However, Miss Giddens accepts the job.
When she arrives at the house, she immediately meets Flora, and some days later also her brother Miles, who came back from school because of an expulsion. Miles and Flora are very smart and educated.
One day, out of the kitchen window, Miss Giddens sees a man with red hair and mustaches, and a woman, with a white face and dressed up for a funeral.
She asks for an opinion from her only friend, Miss Grose, she discovers that those people are Miss Jessel and Peter Quint… She is  the last baby-sitter of Miles and Flora and he is her secret lover, the gardener. Both died mysteriously.
Initially she ignores these people, and she tries to protect the kids, but later she realizes that they are not the target of these ghosts… They are accomplices of them!
They have always denied it, but one day Flora says something that Miss Giddens understands as a confession about the complicity.
I liked it because it is not a bad yellow-book. The story is intriguing. It is also quite easy to read so I would recommend it to all the yellow-books lovers.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

“THE PANTHOM OF THE OPERA” REVIEW
by Massimiliano

9780194237444.jpg

The author of this novel is the French Gaston Leroux born in Paris the sixth May 1868.
In this opera he tells the story of a lonely unlucky creature called Erik the phantom of the Opera who lived in the cellar of the Opera. Here lives and works Christina Daae, too, a young and talented singer secretly loved by Erik. Christine has never seen him but she considers him his angel of  music sent by his father when he died many years before, when she was a child. Erik taught her to sing without appearing to her, in fact he talks to her with a system of secret passages and games of mirrors and riflections.
Christine has an admirer,  the viscount of Chagny that she had met long before when they were children. Now Raul is in love with her but she is devoted to her angel of music.
Erik is jealous because of this love, so he kidnaps Christine and Raul who tries to save her. Although she is terrified by Erik's appearance, whose face is loathsome and scary, Christine accepts his proposal to stay with him forever.
Touched by the unexpected choice Erik frees her.
Christine and Raul live together  while the Opera House is burning  for a fire caused by Erik. He leaves the place where he lived all his life without leaving his traces.

The novel is a romantic and gothic story with its gloomy characters and dark atmosphere. The happy ending leaves the reader unsatisfied because of the fate reserved to Erik, the characters who captures our human sympathy.
I think Christine is a not brilliant heroine to the modern reader’s eyes, she looks fretful and weak.

The time of narration is full of action and accurate description of places and people. I really like it and I want to see the film, as well, that is as interesting as the novel.

THE BOOKS WE DIDN'T LIKE

THE BOOKS WE DIDN'T LIKE

I didn't like "The Elephant Man". Simone had already told me that he hadn't liked the book but I didn't believe him and so I read it. He was right, the book was boring, nothing interesting happened and the story was incredibly sad.    Patrizia

I didn't like the book "London", because it talks a lot about customs and traditions, but there is nothing about the geography and history of London.     Giammarco

I didn't like "Ghost Stories" because it wasn't a horror book. There weren't scary things, just lots of boring stories.           Eric

I didn't like the book "New York", it was boring and it wasn't interesting. It was only a guide of the city.   Mirko

I didn't like "London" because, at the beginning, I thought it was a novel, but instead it was a guide of the city. The book wasn't  interesting but  it will be useful if , in the future, I decide to go to London.     Mattia

The book that I didn't like is "London" , because it is boring and too long. The reading can be interesting too, but I don't remember anything about it.      Claudio

I didn't like "David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens because the story is not happy, not funny at all and absolutely not amusing ; it's boring and predictable.            Marina

I didn't like the book called " Mary, Queen of Scots" . It's  boring and complicate to understand, although I like historic facts. I didn't like it also because it was badly written and the narration is very slow.   Patryk

The story could also be interesting but it's not very well written and it's difficult to understand. It's slow and boring and I don't recommend it.  Virginia

The book " The Turn of the Screw " is a boring book with an annoying plot. I expected the final part to be better but I was wrong. I do not recommend it to anyone.      Isabella

FRANKENSTEIN

Frankenstein - by Mary Shelley

a review by Marina

Best-seller of horror- gothic literature, it's a very well-known story about a huge, terrible ugly creature, made by a scientist who wanted to give birth to a kind of super human being started from dead body parts.
Instead of the movie, in the book the monster is "human", he can feel and the only thing he wants is love, which no one, neither his creator, wants to give to the creature, because of his appearance, and this is touching.
I liked this story and I recommend this book to everyone.

FRANKENSTEIN

Frankenstein by Luigi

Frankestein is a bestseller book written by Mary Shelley in 1817. It is an horror novel that contains a lot of emotion: love, revenge, destruction, failure and desperation. The main characters of the story are Frankestein and Frankestein's monster, the first wants to create life, so he collects some pieces from dead bodies and other pieces of machine and finally, with electricity the monster starts to live. Then the scientist runs away because he is afraid. The monster searches his creator but it doesn't find him, so for revenge it kills his dears. Frankestein follows it to kill it up to the North Pole and...
Frankestein's monster isn't evil because he only wants to find its creator, to have a woman  to love, infact it suffers for a lonely life.
The book places between reality and fiction, but however the story teaches us more important things, so it has also a moral.
it's adapted for all readers and I advise to read because it's exciting.

THE LOST WORLD

The Lost World - a book review by Mattia

The lost world is a fantasy novel written By Arthur Conan Doyle in 1912.

It is about an expedition to a plateau in Venezuela where prehistoric animals survived.
Malone, a journalist, had to interview Professor George Challenger, a notorious zoologist and scientist, who, some years before, had gone to a plateau in South America where he found a land inhabited by animals of the Jurassic.
The community of scientists in London didn't believe him because he didn't have any evidence: the pterodactyl that he had captured had escaped and the pictures were ruined.
So Challenger proposed to leave for a second expedition to South America together with other Professors and journalists.

If you want to know what happens, read the book!
The reading is fascinating and interesting, it is a book that I recommend to all.

LONDON

 “LONDON” - a review of a book

This book speaks about London city. The book talks about the beautiful things  there are in London; for example the book speaks about the Big Ben, a clock tower situated on the corner of Westminster in the city’s center, inside Westminster there is the English Parliament; in front of this there is  Westminster  Abbey, traditional place to crown the king. The book talks about the other monuments in London for example the London Eye;  Tower Bridge; and the most important places like Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Covent garden.
The book also speaks about the Queen, she lives in London in Buckingham palace, the official Queen’s residence.

In my opinion the book  isn’t very good because it is very similar to a city guide; but it’s very detailed and easy to read.

Little Lord Fauntleroy - a book review by Alessio

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

Pride and prejudice - a book review by Angela

The book is about the Bennet family, of modest social background, living with five daughters in Longbourne.
Charles Bingley, a rich bachelor, comes to live in the neighborhood with his two sisters and his friend Darcy. Bingley and Jane, the oldest of the Bennet sisters, fall in love. Darcy is attracted to the second of the Bennet sisters, Elizabeth who doesn't like him because of his haughty behavior.
At the same time Darcy and Bingley's sisters, who don't like the Bennets, manage to separate Bingley and Jane and go back to London.
Elizabeth meets Darcy again and she discovers that he loves her but when he asks her to marry him she indignantly refuses. But when Elizabeth's sister, Lydia, escapes with a man and Darcy finds them and provides a dowry for the two lovers, Elizabeth falls in love with him and they get engaged.
Bingley and Jane are reunited too.
I like this book chiefly because of the happy ending and also because lots of things happen.

I am Legend

I am Legend - film review by Mirko

Actors : Will Smith, Alice Braga
U.S.A. 2007
Budget 43 million $

New York, 2012. A virus killed all men and they turned into vampires. The city is deserted and the only survivor is Dr. Robert Neville, who discovered a serum that could save humanity.
Neville moves in the light of day with his dog Wolf, following the daily lives, waiting for the night, when the vampires emerge from the shadows, attacking everything in their path. Created as a rapper, he becomes a television star, and has long dealt with the film.

Despite the need to include the component of horror, except for the final half hour, I am Legend, focuses on the individual, the man who could change the world, about who has the knowledge that is very easy to destroy what you have to hand all day.

This film is very interesting beacuse there are a lot of action scenes and is very fast and is very emotional.

  3. It sends shivers up and down my spine
Hello. I'm a very interesting, intelligent and brave man.
And for Halloween, I've come to the most haunted village in Britain to teach you some idioms about...
Fear.
Come with me to the churchyard... where we'll find some... ghosts...
They say two ghosts – 'the White Lady of Dering' and 'the Red Lady' - haunt this churchyard.
But I don't believe in ghosts...
What do you mean I'm shaking like a leaf?
In English, when someone is so scared they can't stop moving, you can say they're 'shaking like a leaf.'

In fact, I don't want to be here any more. I think I'd prefer to go home... ...before it gets dark.

Oh no! I have to get to the station. And avoid... The Screaming Woods.
This place sends shivers up and down my spine.
In English, when something frightens you very much, you can say 'It sends shivers up and down my spine.'

ENGLAND

ENGLAND  - a book review by Giammarco

This book is about the British Isles. It describes the geography of England, the most important cities and the history and traditions of the British Isles. The book speaks a lot of London and the big cities of England, but reserves space for the English countryside and the traditions of the peoples of these areas. It speaks very well of the English Kingdom, giving big importance to the British Royal Family.
In my opinion this book is very interesting.

TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the sea is  one of the science fiction and adventure
books written by Jules Verne(1828-1905) and published in 1870.

As the title, it's a novel that talks about the journey of  men under the sea at 20.000 leagues of distance.
The story was set in the second half of the eighteen century, the sea was haunted by a strange monster that caused numerous accidents to ships. For this reason the main character Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist accompanied by his faithful assistant Conseil and Canadian whaler Ned Land, was invited by the US government  to join the expedition on board a ship called the Abraham Lincoln. For a series of adventures the three found the “creature” which was just a huge submarine, the Nautilus, with the captain Nemo who was hospitable  and invited them to join his crew. He also  said they could never leave because he was afraid they would betray his existence to the world. During the journey under the sea, they encountered many unknown creatures and interesting things, faced numerous adventures, but deep inside their hearts they plotted to go back home.

The novel shows  us many imaginative aspects of the sea beds: like the "sea forest "which is animated by numerous sea beings; ruins and wrecks of ships caused by power of the sea; some anomalous places like the cemetery where  the died members of the crew lay....
Overall "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" is a fantastic fiction novel.

The plot: On Christmas Eve, around 1812, Pip, an orphan of about seven, encounters an escaped convict in the village churchyard while visiting his mother's, father's and younger brothers' graves. The convict scares Pip into stealing food for him, and a file to grind away his shackles, from the home he shares with his abusive older sister and her kind, passive husband Joe Gargery, a blacksmith. The next day, soldiers recapture two convicts engaged in a fight and return them to the prison ship.Miss Havisham, a wealthy spinster, who wears an old wedding dress and lives in the dilapidated Satis House, asks Pip's Uncle Pumblechook to find a boy to play with her adopted daughter Estella. Pip begins to visit Miss Havisham and Estella, with whom he falls in love.As a young apprentice at Joe Gargery's forge, Pip is approached by a lawyer, Mr Jaggers, who tells him he is to receive a large sum of money from an anonymous benefactor and must leave for London immediately where he is to become a gentleman. Pip believes Miss Havisham to be his benefactress and visits her and Estella, who has returned from studying on the Continent. With Pip now heavily in debt, his benefactor is revealed to be Abel Magwitch, the convict he helped, who was transported to New South Wales where he eventually became wealthy. There is a warrant for Magwitch's arrest in England and he will be hanged if he is caught. A plan is therefore hatched for him to flee by boat. It is also revealed that Estella is the daughter of Magwitch and Mr Jaggers's housemaid, Molly, whom Jaggers defended in a murder charge and who gave up her daughter to be adopted by Miss Havisham.Pip confronts Miss Havisham with Estella's history. Miss Havisham stands too close to the fire which ignites her dress and she eventually dies from her injuries. While attempting to escape, Magwitch is captured and sent to jail where he dies shortly before his execution. Pip is about to be arrested for unpaid debts when he falls ill. Joe nurses him back to health and pays off his debts. At the end of the original version Pip meets Estella on the streets, who has remarried after her abusive husband has died. Pip says that he is glad she is a different person now from the coldhearted girl Miss Havisham reared her to be and that "suffering had been stronger than Miss Havisham's teaching and had given her a heart to understand what my heart used to be." Pip remains single.

Comment: It’s a beatiful novel, with a very deep and full of emotions plot. It makes believe in true love and happy endings. I recommend it too all!

Genre : Dramatic
Year : 2002

Plot
City of God is based on a true story that takes place in the '60s. In the slums of Rio De Janeiro two boys, growing up in the neighborhood, take on different paths in life. The story is told through the eyes of Buscarè, a poor young fisherman's son who dreams of becoming a photographer one day. THE LOVE OF A KING - by Patryk

The book "the love of a king" is a  short story based on a true historical event. But it isn't a traditional historical story, and if you read it you will understand why!
The story is set after World War one in England. The main character is the king of England, at time, Edward VIII. He became king in 1936, he was perhaps the most popular monarch in British history. But he was also in love with an American woman, Wallis Simpson, who was still married. The government presented Edward with an ultimatum... What did he decide? We know only that he was in love with that woman  so much... and if you read it you will discover it!
It's a fantastic true story and it is also so intriguing. It's not only the story of king Edward's life, but it is more, it is an incredible love story. This book teach us what a wonderful thing love is and it show us its mysterious power!
The book is a fantastic company during a journey or in your free time. It is very well written and easy to read.
I liked it because I didn't know before about this story and because it made a positive impression on me.

The main character is Jack Sparrow- Johnny Depp, who's a poor pirate in search of his ship, the Black Pearl. This film was dated on 2003. All the films of this saga are set in the Caribbean Islands.
